A Government By the People

The American government has become a government that has failed the American people since elections of congress and President Bush. When government is elected by corporate money elections become corporate controlled.

The failure of the American government has hurt the economy where a total recession has already started in the country today. The American people have been failed by congress as well as President Bush with the total failure to bring and end to the Iraqi war.

The American people want and end to the five year war in Iraq where the war has been fought wrong from every avenue of American involvement. The Iraq war has been planned so badly from the very start this war has been bound for failure for the Iraqi people and the American government.

The biggest risk has been for the American troops who have been fighting a war against four sects plus Al-Qaida terrorist attacks. Time has come for the American government to bring home America`s troops from Iraq. With no working elected form of government in Iraq failure to this war is destiny.

Iraq has become a eternal struggle just to stabilize from the start Iraqi people have been killing each other with American troops trying to stop this from happening .No matter how much stability comes for Iraq without a elected working government Iraq is a country without leadership or direction with American troops holding the Iraqi stability.

Iraq is a war no American citizen wanted from the very start yet the American president has not heard the American people`s need to bring the troops out of harms way once an for all. Iraq will never find a final solution until Iraq settles they`re own differences.

Americans have been paying both for the Iraq at the pump as well as stores time to bring back a people`s government in America. First America needs for congress as well as president Bush to start working for the American people again.

America needs new forms of fuel to help free America of so much foreign oil dependences this weakens America`s economy both in rising product cost as well as over charging at the gas pump. America`s foreign trade deficit has hurt American markets as well with bulk sales of to many foreign products.

Out sourcing so many Jobs as well as American needs is giving strength to foreign economies while weakening American dollar of the world market where the American continues in decline. These acts have left fifty million Americans without health insurance Jobs for the long run once again weakening the American job source.

America should be a government elected by and for the people as long as lobbyist and corporate money control election campaigns for any government office America has stopped working for the American people. America needs to return to a people`s elected government elected by the people`s vote not lobbyist or state delegates.

America has become a government elected by the corporate dollar controlled by corporate dollar this takes away the American people`s ability Election need to be run and won by American voters putting the power of the vote back into the American people`s control.

While big American corporations are profiting in the tens of billions in foreign trades and products it weakens the country for the American people. The vast outsourcing of so many American jobs as well as American products hurts Americas free market system.

American helps the American companies by giving tax`s credits for foreign products when the American government giving tax credits to American companies making and selling The USA brand products. Once again the American people are failed by lost jobs and the loss of making USA products using American labor.

The American corporate government has turned the people`s government into a government controlled by foreign aids products along with foreign constantly taking American jobs and money of the American economy. Once again the people Of America lose jobs with health insurance along with pensions.

America has become a company elected government helping only American companies weaken the American economy while making China`s economy grow at the America people`s cost. Once again The American has failed the American people.

America n people are being scammed out of they`re homes by floating interest rates stealing homes from hard working American people trying to have a small piece of the American dream. Once again big corporations have failed the American people with high rising interest rates.

Corporate controlled government stops the American government form working for the American people this weakens all phases of life for the American people. From overinflated gasoline prices to out sourcing to many American Jobs making American products cost only the American citizen at or below America`s poverty level.

For America to have a people`s working government elected people have to have the power of the people`s vote decide American elections. Other wise American government will once again fail the American people

Working Memory, Memory Deficits, and Education

Research has shown that specific portions of the brain are responsible for memory. The term “memory” is generally used to refer to the ability of the human brain to acquire, manipulate, process, and store information from the environment.

Memory is divided into three types: short-term, long-term, and working memory. Research tells us that short-term memory lasts approximately 20 seconds. Information from the environment is accepted into short-term memory, where it is quickly assessed and, if needed, transferred to working memory. Finally, if it has been decided the final information is worth saving for later use, it is moved into long-term memory for permanent storage and later retrieval according to individual schemata - a fancy term for the brain's filing system.

Working memory is a theoretical framework that refers to a temporary storage area for information in the brain. It has been defined as the ability to hold and manipulate information in the brain over short periods of time. Some believe that short-term memory combines somewhat with learning, reasoning, and comprehension to create what is called working memory. This theory is based on the concepts that working memory is not one process, but is made up of several separate processes. The capacity to use working memory can be limited by many things, including task difficulty or environmental distractions.

Researchers have started to tie working memory to long-term memory. Some are trying to prove that the task of placing several pieces of related information into meaningful groups, or chunks, may allow us to recall larger amounts of information at a time. We accomplish this by using information held in working memory as cues for retrieval. Others perceive working memory as being a part of long-term memory, and made up of two components: the focus of attention and several representations from long-term memory. In this regard, any number of long-term representations can be present at one time, but the focus of attention and resultant processing move through one item at a time.

Memory Difficulties

Performing more than one mental task at a time requires quite a bit of working memory capacity. Multitasking ability varies between people, but it is generally understood that people are not very adept at performing more than one cognitive task at a time, as working memory can easily be overloaded. Experience and automaticity in some tasks appear to help multitasking ability. When there is a problem in any part of the memory systems, human ability to perform even the simplest task will tend to decline.

Working memory capacity is often tested by using memory span tasks, such as those offered in the Weschler Intelligence Scales for Children IV (WISC-IV). Most of these tasks require a child to hear or read groups of information. The child must then recite the information in a specified way, such as a series of numbers in the reverse order than they were given.

Some memory problems are caused by brain abnormalities, medical issues such as cancer, stroke, or head injury, or by personal issues such as stress or alcohol abuse. However, in many instances the cause of memory problems is completely unknown. Memory problems often cause difficulties in several other areas, including problem-solving, comprehension, and language acquisition. Children with short-term memory problems may appear to know something one minute, but not be able to recall the same information a few minutes later. Working memory requires attention, and any disruption in the focus of attention will likely cause a complete loss of the information in working memory at the time of the disruption.

The areas affected by memory deficits and the resulting learning difficulties are determined by individual strengths and weaknesses in the three memory areas. Some warning signs of memory deficits may include: trouble following lengthy directions, difficulty staying on topic during conversations, reading comprehension problems, or difficulty with multi-step math problems.

It is generally stated that there are six main categories of processing deficits, with some sub-categories under hearing, seeing, and speaking. The following list is not all-inclusicve by any means! There are hundreds of ways that these processing deficits can manifest themselves in children. This is only meant to offer you an idea of the wide variety of processing issues that a child may have to cope with on a daily basis.

  1. Processing what we hear.

  2. Auditory Sequencing - a child may show confusion with number sequences or lists.

Auditory Memory - a child may have difficulty remembering what was heard or important items, or she may spell poorly.

Auditory Discrimination - a child may often seem to misunderstand, or he may seem to hear but not to listen.

Auditory Figure Ground - a child may have trouble hearing sounds over background noises.

  3. Processing what we see (visual).

  4. Visual Sequencing - a child may lose her place easily, have problems reading , or may have difficulty with equations.

Visual Memory - a child may have difficulty remembering what was seen, or have low reading comprehension.

Visual Figure Ground - a child may have trouble seeing an image on a background, or following a line of print while reading.

Visual Discrimination - a child may have difficulty seeing the difference between two similar objects

  5. How we speak (language).

  6. Expressive Language - a child may have difficulty expressing themselves, or he may sound "cynical".

Receptive Language - a child may appears to be "not listening", or hand in incomplete work.

  7. Spatial Orientation (the way things are perceived in the environment) - a child may lose materials, have difficulty with oral reading, or be unable to judge time.

  8. Visual motor integration - a child may have problems in test taking, show difficulty copying from board or book, or have poor written work.

  9. Dysgraphia (letter formation) - a child may not be able to form letters correctly, making it extremely for anyone to read their writing

Education and Memory Deficits

Memory and processing deficits interfere with the way information is understood. Working memory is very important, as it is the place where information is assessed, categorized, manipulated, and processed. Without working memory, we would not be able to solve problems or understand language. The ability to quickly and accurately process and comprehend information is necessary in daily classroom activities. Working memory deficits appear to be the largest contributor to learning difficulties in language, literacy, and mathematics. The effects of memory deficits on children can be as individual as the children themselves.

Children with poor memory skills are often described as inconsistent and may even be referred for learning disability or behavioral evaluations. If a child can not retain information long enough to process it adequately, then the information may not be retained or may be incorrect upon later retrieval. Reading comprehension depends a great deal on working memory capacity. Some children can read the words, but they are not able to make sense of the completed sentence or paragraph, as information becomes lost during the reading. Acquiring complex skills will be a slow and difficult process for these children.

Baseline educational assessments address what a child already knows, and results are likely influenced by prior education or socioeconomic status. Working memory test results generally are unaffected by either of these factors. There is often a correlation between low scores on standardized education tests and suspected working memory deficits. It appears that the most efficient way of determining children who may be at risk would be to combine knowledge testing and ability testing, such as that for working memory.

Educational Support

As in many other areas of learning difficulties today, the number of children with confirmed memory deficits is increasing. It makes perfect sense that there will also be an increasing need for instructor support. Offering teacher inservice programs on common memory deficits would provide a broad understanding of what a teacher may encounter in a classroom, and how best to cope with a child with weak memory skills.

Supporting these students in our classrooms is an absolute must for their success. Reducing loads on working memory may help improve working memory skills. There are many ways to accomplish this, including using external memory aids, reducing task length, and using brief, simple instructions whenever possible. Reviewing frequently, in short sessions, and in a variety of ways is generally regarded as a good way to improve and build memory skills. Many strategies that are commonly used with exceptional students can also be applied with success to those with working memory deficits. Some of these may include breaking instructions down into small steps, posting frequently used information for reference, and allowing extra time for assignments and tests. Most of the strategies that are suggested are easily incorporated into the everyday routines of a classroom.

Beyond the difficulties with actual learning processes, memory deficits can also impact individual behavior in the classroom. For some children with memory deficits, frequent failure to complete other tasks correctly causes additional frustration. This may be seen as a disruption in general behavior as these children act out verbally or physically, or show disrespect to their teachers or to other students. Supporting these students may require modification of other classroom tasks to ensure at least partial success, and reduce the frustration of repeated failures. Offer these children routine tasks regularly, so the tasks are easily recognized and performed without producing an overload on working memory.

Conclusion

Memory deficits, especially those of working memory, can be responsible for a wide range of difficulties in both learning and behavior. As current research delves further into the theories of working memory, we should be able to see a deeper understanding of how learning is generally affected. Educators need to search for strategies and information that will allow us to support children with various memory deficits.

Morning Edition, November 7, 2005 · I am an American Muslim. I believe in pluralism. In the Holy Quran, God tells us, "I created you into diverse nations and tribes that you may come to know one another." I believe America is humanity's best opportunity to make God's wish that we come to know one another a reality.

In my office hangs Norman Rockwell's illustration Freedom of Worship. A Muslim holding a Quran in his hands stands near a Catholic woman fingering her rosary. Other figures have their hands folded in prayer and their eyes filled with piety. They stand shoulder-to-shoulder facing the same direction, comfortable with the presence of one another and yet apart. It is a vivid depiction of a group living in peace with its diversity, yet not exploring it.

We live in a world where the forces that seek to divide us are strong. To overcome them, we must do more than simply stand next to one another in silence.

I attended high school in the western suburbs of Chicago. The group I ate lunch with included a Jew, a Mormon, a Hindu, a Catholic and a Lutheran. We were all devout to a degree, but we almost never talked about religion. Somebody would announce at the table that they couldn't eat a certain kind of food, or any food at all, for a period of time. We all knew religion hovered behind this, but nobody ever offered any explanation deeper than "my mom said," and nobody ever asked for one.

A few years after we graduated, my Jewish friend from the lunchroom reminded me of an experience we both wish had never happened. A group of thugs in our high school had taken to scrawling anti-Semitic slurs on classroom desks and shouting them in the hallway.

I did not confront them. I did not comfort my Jewish friend. Instead I averted my eyes from their bigotry, and I avoided my friend because I couldn't stand to face him.

My friend told me he feared coming to school those days, and he felt abandoned as he watched his close friends do nothing. Hearing him tell me of his suffering and my complicity is the single most humiliating experience of my life.

My friend needed more than my silent presence at the lunch table. I realize now that to believe in pluralism means I need the courage to act on it. Action is what separates a belief from an opinion. Beliefs are imprinted through actions.

In the words of the great American poet Gwendolyn Brooks: "We are each other's business; we are each other's harvest; we are each other's magnitude and bond."

I cannot go back in time and take away the suffering of my Jewish friend, but through action I can prevent it from happening to others.

Real Life vs. Facebook

Today I spend some time stripping away a great deal of the content on my Facebook page.

I did this for a number of reasons, which I'll try to explain:-

  • I realised that if I looked at what my Facebook profile said about me, it wasn't genuine. Sure I have some of my oldest friends on there, but phrases like "Are you sexy?" or "Jo Bloggs bitch slapped me", well they just aren't what I want to be. They represent frivolity, popularity for it's own sake, time spent doing things that really don't mount up to anything more than just a quick waste of time. And that's not me anymore, or who I want to be.
  • If somebody else saw my profile, and they were thinking about me in a more professional role, what would my profile tell them?
  • A cluttered profile was cluttering my mind. I have decided to reduce my input and the calls upon my concentration. A clear Facebook profile will subtly reinforce that in my mind.
  • I was getting annoyed at the crassness of applications that really only exist to get spread around Facebook as quickly as possible. They ignore one basic fact, it's rude to impose upon friends. And therefore any application, however great, that insists I send an invite to 20 of my friends before I can use it, does not get any further with me.
  • I realised that 'Friends' are more than just notches on a Facebook bedpost. They require care, thought and a genuine desire to share quality time with, rather than post an impersonal message that's been sent to 20 others. Just like the crassness of people who send 'round robin' Christmas letters, if something is to be said, it should be said directly.

So while I will keep on Facebook, it is now going to be more of a virtual calling card. A way for old friends to find me and stay in touch. But most of the staying in touch will be done in the real world, where it matters.
